About My Clients

I provide online, individual psychotherapy to adults 18 years and older. I very much enjoy working with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and lived experiences, including Black and Indigenous people of color, LGBTQ+ populations, people with disabilities, and persons living in rural areas. Clients report an ideal fit with my practice when they are motivated, enjoy a sense of humor, appreciate direct feedback and interaction, and like to think about therapy outside of session.

My Background and Approach

I am a former tenure-track faculty member and taught bachelor’s rehabilitation studies, master’s rehabilitation counseling, and doctoral-level health services to research students in the Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. For postdoctoral work, I completed a research and clinical fellowship in outpatient and community-based mental health services at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. I also completed a minority health services research traineeship at Columbia University in New York, New York. With the desire to live closer to family, I returned home to Wisconsin during the COVID-19 era. My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, chronic pain and illness, disability, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, substance use disorders, autism spectrum disorder, trauma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), grief, life transitions, aging, and general mental health issues.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

My research, which has been on the development of new self-management, counseling, and psychotherapy interventions, has informed my personal beliefs about my clinical practice as I focus on key evidence-based elements in therapy, such as building a strong therapeutic alliance or developing goals, which have been linked to favorable client outcomes. In addition, I continue to learn about and offer a variety of new or emerging approaches, such as trauma-informed interventions. In general, however, I believe therapy should be individualized, as there are elements of science and art that make it effective. I think therapy works best when clients are committed to changing their way of thinking and trying new behaviors and activities when other ways of living are not working well for them. It also helps if individuals know that such changing of thinking and habits will happen gradually and take significant time, patience, practice, and effort.
